SEO – Types of SEO in Digital Marketing

Optimization of web pages to let the search engines like Google index, crawl, and rank your website is SEO. But, it’s such a vast field that it has been divided into 3 sub-fields, namely on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO. Without understanding each of them, you won’t fully get the idea of how SEO works.

So, let’s look at them separately.

On-page SEO

Optimizing everything present on your website for search engines is on-page SEO.

What are the on-page SEO factors?

On-page SEO checklist:

  • Content quality
  • Design of your page
  • URL
  • Keywords
  • Images size
  • Meta description
  • Title tags
  • Speed
  • Internal linking
  • User-friendliness

These factors let the search engines decide whether your webpage is relevant to what people are searching for and if it’s a valuable source.

For instance, one of the most important factors in on-page SEO is keyword optimization. You optimize your website with the keywords your potential customers are searching for, which helps the search engine to put your page in front of them.

Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO is everything you do “off” of your website to optimize it for search engines. These external factors add credibility to your website in search engines’ eyes.

For instance, although social media signals don’t directly put your website on the first page of Google, or any other search engine, they have a positive impact on the Google ranking indirectly.

When you share your content on your social media profile, your article or product page gets visitors. Your social media audience may share your link with their audience if your content is good.

This could lead to a surge in traffic to your website. This traffic sends a signal to the search engine that your content is valuable, which significantly increases the chances for your website to get ranked on Google search result’s first page.

Other off-page SEO factors include reviews, backlinks, blog commenting, guest posting, forum posting, branded searches, E.A.T (expertise, authority, trust), and everything you do outside your website to optimize it.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is more like on-page SEO; you optimize your website (backend) to improve search engine ranking.

Technical SEO involves making your website fast for the visitors, and indexable, crawlable, and understandable for the search engines.

Important technical SEO checklist:

  • Registering your website with Google Search Console (for indexability)
  • Creating an XML sitemap (helps in understanding and crawling of your website)
  • Making your web pages mobile-friendly (responsive web design)
  • Speeding up your website
  • Using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) for security

Technical SEO is important because your website needs to be crawled by the search engine so that it can put your site in front of relevant people.

Plus, when someone searches your keyword in the search engine, it means they need your services/products, and would most probably take action on your website. This makes SEO a must for every business website.

Search engine optimization attracts potential customers that are interested in your business. So, every visitor from the search engine is a potential lead.

All three SEO types are essential for your website to make sure search engines put it on the first page of the search results.

However, it’s a marathon; it’s the small and meaningful steps that matter in SEO. And, you must be consistent in your SEO strategy to get the most out of it.
